Basic Electrician Courses

If you aren’t sure about a career as an electrician, but think it may be something you’d enjoy, you can always take some basic electrician classes at a local technical school or community college to see how you like it.  You can also enroll in on-line electrical courses.  The point is that you can take some basic electrician courses without enrolling in or committing to a complete program.  This way, you can learn a little about the field and see if it is something you’d like to do as a career.

Basic electrician courses will cover things like alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC).  You’ll also learn about things like resistance, different types of wires and their sizes as well as the different types of electrical items like switches, outlets, etc…  The basic courses are a good introduction to electricity and you will know by the time you complete them if you are interested in pursuing any more learning on the subject and working in the electrical field or not.

Electrician Courses and National Electric Code

Once a person passes the basic electrician courses in a program, they start learning about the National Electric Code and how it is used as a reference on the job.  The National Electric Code (NEC) is the legal reference of requirements and clearly states the appropriate materials, sizes, locations, etc… of various electrical parts for every specific type of job or need.  This is what a master electrician refers to when planning a job, as they will need to have things like the correct size wires, proper type of conduit, a large enough main panel with the right size breakers for the individual circuits, etc… 

The NEC not only states the exact materials needed, it gives measurement requirements as well.  For instance, the number of outlets required along so many feet of wall and how high they are required to be installed from the floor.  Nobody is expected to memorize the NEC, but electrician courses do teach how to use it—meaning how to look up various situations and how to read the requirements described therein…
